Animals were used in developing insulin for diabetics, chemotherapy drugs for cancer patients and antibiotics for all of us. Animals were immunized for rabies, polio, measles, mumps and hepatitis before any humans ever received any vaccinations. Without the use of animals, we would never have developed the ability to perform coronary bypasses; heart, lung, kidney or liver transplants; arthroscopic surgery and hip replacements to name but a few examples.2
The other animal research question that arises is "Are animals enough like humans to make them valid experimental subjects? |

There's a family that fought child protective services authorities because they didn't want to put their daughter on chemotherapy drugs. They wanted to treat their daughter naturally, with their own method of healing. But the state said, "No, you can't do that. We're going to force your child to be poisoned with chemotherapeutic agents that generate profits for prescription drug companies... chemical agents that don't have any sort of documented benefit for enhancing the lifespan of kids or adult patients, and yet are used by every oncologist in the country. |

We have also observed that DAS may help destroy cancer cells by modifying their capacity to resist specific chemotherapy drugs.
In summary, the anti-cancer properties of vegetables in the garlic family seem linked chiefly to their content in sulfur-containing compounds. Nevertheless, in the case of onions, the important contribution of other classes of molecules should not be overlooked: polyphenols such as quercetin, for example, a molecule able to prevent the growth of a great number of lab-grown cancer cells and which interferes with the development of cancers in animals. |

Herceptin™, one of the newer breast cancer chemotherapy drugs touted by the pharmaceutical industry, depends on the presence of a special cancer cell receptor in certain types of highly aggressive breast cancers called the HER-2/neu receptor. A new study found that N-3 fatty acids also suppress this receptor.605 Animal tests found that N-3 oils powerfully suppressed breast cancer growth and the spread of the cancers. Herceptin™ has a lot of bad side effects, whereas DHA has none. |

If you are undergoing treatment for breast cancer and find yourself feeling depressed or frightened, try to keep in mind that when medications (especially chemotherapy drugs) are stopped, you will probably start to feel better and to look at things in a different light. Think about all the women, including many celebrities and public figures, who have had breast cancer and have gone on to have fulfilling lives and careers. Thousands of women who have had breast cancer are living happy, normal lives. |

The chemotherapy drugs most commonly used to treat women with breast cancer include combinations of the following drugs: cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Neosar), methotrexate (Folex, Rheuma-trex), fluorouracil (5-FU, Adrucil, Efudex, Fluoroplex), and doxorubicin (Adriamycin, Rubex, Doxil). Tamoxifen, an anti-estrogen (Nolvadex), is given to breast cancer patients whose disease is categorized as estrogen-receptor positive; other breast cancer patients generally do not receive tamoxifen. |

However, men also suffer from bone loss, often as a side effect of certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, thyroid hormone, corticosteroids, and anticonvulsants, or as a result of other illnesses. Fully half of all women, and 25 percent of American men, between the ages of fifty and seventy-five show signs of some degree of osteopenia (low bone mass) or osteoporosis.
Bone is constantly restoring itself. Cells called osteoblasts are responsible for making bone, and other cells, called osteoclasts, are needed to remove old bone as its minerals are absorbed for use elsewhere in the body. |

Subsequent researchers have shown how these effects might be possible—they have reported that cat's claw can aid in DNA cellular repair and prevent cells from mutating; it also can help prevent the loss of white blood cells and immune cell damage caused by many chemotherapy drugs (a common side effect called leukopenia).19-21
Another significant area of study has focused on cat's claw's anti-inflammatory properties. |
| These chemicals represent a class of substances that have been studied since the early 1970s for their antitumorous and anticancerous activities and are today being developed into chemotherapy drugs. A different class of chemicals found in espinheira santa— triterpene chemicals called cangorins—have also evidenced significant antitumorous, antileukemic, and anticancerous properties. |
| PLANT CHEMICALS
Plant chemicals found in graviola have demonstrated the ability to kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells— including cancer cells which have developed a resistance to multiple chemotherapy drugs.
Many active compounds and chemicals have been found in graviola, as scientists have been studying its properties since the 1940s. Most of the research on graviola focuses on a novel set of chemicals called Annonaceous acetogenins. Graviola produces these natural compounds in its leaf and stem, bark, and fruit seeds. |
| These side effects were nausea and vomiting (very common with chemotherapy drugs) and anti-vitamin K activity (the main concerns being this causes anemia and an anticoagulation effect). Interestingly, other chemicals in the whole plant extract (which, initially, showed positive anti-tumor effects and very low toxicity) demonstrated positive effects on vitamin K and, conceivably, compensated for lapachol's negative effect. |

If the use of chemotherapy drugs constitutes an improvement in the treatment of certain types of cancers, even taking side effects into account, it is nonetheless true that many cancers cannot be cured in this way. This may seem surprising when one considers what powerful cell poisons these agents are, but the fact remains: cancer treatment faces its greatest obstacle in the form of the body's own resistance. |

However, certain healthy cells, such as those that make up the intestinal lining, or those in bone marrow, must also divide regularly to adequately fulfill their function; these cells also make prime targets for chemotherapy drugs, a phenomenon that contributes significantly to their toxic effects.
THE LIMITS OF CURRENT THERAPIES
In spite of the important progress made in the last few years, we must admit that cancer remains a public health problem of the first order and that the means that are used to treat it are still all too often inadequate. |

Dactinomycin is an antibiotic used to combat Wilm's tumor and other forms of cancer. To imagine how it works, think of a developer building a tract of new houses. Before doing so, he must unroll the blueprints to figure out how many boards to cut, how many windows to make, and so on. If you prevent those blueprints from unrolling, no new houses can be built. |

One of the main ways that cancer cells develop resistance to chemotherapy drugs is by creating an intercellular pump, which is capable of pushing anticancer agents out of the cell before they can kill it. On average, only about two percent of the cancer cells in any given person might develop this pump—but they are the two percent that can eventually grow and expand to create multi-drug-resistant tumors. Some of the latest research on acetogenins reported that they were capable of shutting down these intercellular pumps, thereby killing multi-drug-resistant tumors. |

Some medications can interfere with mitochondrial function and energy production, such as HIV drugs (protease inhibitors), statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs), cancer chemotherapy drugs, some anticonvulsants (anti-epilepsy drugs) such as Depakote, and tetracycline (an antibiotic). Ask your doctor about any side effects you may be experiencing while taking medications.

Yet, over two dozen chemotherapy drugs have been approved for use in metastasized breast cancer. In these cases, it is apparently hoped that the chemotherapy treatments may be able to extend the life of the patient somewhat.22 Once again, we are looking at a palliative treatment, with the doctor hoping to buy the patient time but not necessarily expecting a cure.
As mentioned earlier, surgery alone can prevent recurrence for about 90 percent of the women surgically treated for non-metastasized breast cancer. |
| And the fact that so many chemotherapy drugs actually cause cancer is a very real threat to the public at large as well as to the environment. When cancer patients receive chemotherapy, much of their drug treatment gets passed into the public sewage systems through their urine. It thereby becomes an environmental carcinogen that may eventually cause cancer in other humans or animals.

In recent years, researchers have looked at combining DHA with a number of different chemotherapy drugs for treating advanced breast cancer.
In a laboratory study, scientists took tissue samples from 56 breast cancer patients.19 They measured levels of EFAs in the samples, then doused them with several commonly used chemotherapy drugs. They found that tissues containing DHA responded significantly better to the drugs.
What works in the laboratory, of course, doesn't always pan out when the treatment is applied to people. |

Protecting Breast Cells Against Dangerous Estrogens
In 1991, researchers at the Institute for Hormone Research announced that they had been able to induce the body to convert the stronger form of estrogen (estradiol) into the weaker form (estriol) without using drugs. Estriol is considered to be a more desirable form of estrogen. |
