In the next chapter, we'll investigate how green tea and polyphenols successfully prevent cancers that strike specific organs and tissues of the body as well as how green tea supports the body during chemotherapy and radiation cancer therapy.
CHAPTER 5
Tea's Effect on Cancers & Side Effects of Cancer Treatments
Although fatal cases of cancer have decreased slightly, cancer is poised to become this country's top killer—mostly because cancer fatalities are not decreasing as rapidly as heart-disease fatalities are. |
| Additionally, green tea eases the adverse effects of cancer therapies, such as radiation and chemotherapy. Other research shows that tea, and green tea in particular, bolsters the heart's resistance to cardiovascular diseases, prevents dental cavities, lengthens a teadrinker's life span, detoxifies the body, and boosts the immune function.
Recently scientists working around the world have identified the substances in green tea that provide the majority of its health benefits. |
| These results indicate that theanine from green tea boosts the effectiveness of chemotherapy while rnirurnizing. its. side effects. Dr. Sadzuka, summing up his research, commented that "it is confirmed that combination of theanine is able to enhance the anti-tumor activity without the increase of side effects of ADR."
The possibility of green tea as a supportive agent during cancer treatment first emerged in the minds of researchers as a result of the exposure of Japanese civilians to massive levels of radiation after the atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. |
| In addition, green tea can play a supportive role during the treatment of cancer with radiation or chemotherapy. Of course, the promising story of green tea in cancer therapy is far from over; scientists continue to design and conduct research to clarify the benefits of green tea in cancer prevention and treatment. In the following chapter, we will turn our attention to green tea's ability to prevent another major killer: heart disease. |
| Immune-compromising abnormalities can develop as a side effect after chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer, both of which interfere with the proper function of the bone marrow. In particular, lowered counts of white blood cells are a common adverse effect of cancer treatment. Not-yet-published research from several Chinese hospitals working with cancer patients demonstrates that green tea polyphenols can boost white blood cell levels, and may accomplish this even better than the standard medications in use. (See Chapter 5 for a more thorough account of these positive studies. |

Antioxidants not only aid in the battle against cancerous cells, they improve the defense of healthy cells against the damaging effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
Antioxidants Help Good Cells
It is common knowledge that almost all of the harmful side effects of chemo- and radiation therapy to normal cells are the result of the increased oxidative stress these treatments create inside the body. |

| I believe that minimally invasive tumor ablation together with chemotherapy will play the most important role in the treatment of tumors in the years to come," he adds.

Some experts, however, don't think this method is as good as the standard surgery for the treatment of liver cancer.
"I would be wary of making too much out of this new technology," says Dr. Charles Cha, an assistant professor of gastrointestinal surgery and surgical oncology at Yale University School of Medicine. |

Common reasons for significant hair loss include stress and emotional trauma, nutritional deficiencies, skin conditions that especially affect the scalp such as psoriasis, taking drugs such as chemotherapy, an imbalance in thyroid gland functioning, pregnancy, and menopause. For any of these cases, it will be beneficial to seek help from a homeopathic practitioner who will target treatment to support the body in coping with the situation. If, however, the problem is a milder one, using the most appropriate homeopathic remedy from those listed below may be helpful. |

With no time to spare, he decided to undergo conventional chemotherapy and tried to emotionally brace himself for the painful side effects. As best he could, because of regular vomiting, he took 10 grams of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E, 500 mg of vitamins B, and B6, and other supplements daily.
The chemotherapy bought Erik the time he needed, and after several weeks he increased the dosages of some supplements and added others, such as coenzyme Q10, to his regimen. As his leukemia went into remission and his white blood cell count normalized, he reduced the dosages of his supplements. |

Think about it: Oncologists openly push dangerous chemotherapy drugs that cause permanent damage to the brain, heart, liver and kidneys, even while insisting that patients take no vitamins, superfoods or nutritional supplements to protect their healthy cells during the chemo treatments. General Practitioners send patients home with prescriptions for dangerous COX-2 inhibitor drugs, diabetes drugs, statin drugs and psychotropic drugs that kill, at minimum, tens of thousands of Americans every year through heart attacks, strokes, liver failure and suicides. |
| Parents are already being arrested for not subjecting their children to chemotherapy or giving in to ADHD drugs. If this trend continues, it won't be long before anyone who rejects vaccinations, drugs and psychiatric medications will be considered a criminal (or terrorist). Parents, be warned: The State is out to medicate your child, and if you resist, you may have your children taken away! |

If you want death, go with chemotherapy. It's known as "legalized euthanasia" in medical circles. But if you want to live, go with natural medicine.
There's really no such thing as "cancer"
Remember this: I've had cancer a thousand times in my life already. So have you. We beat it automatically, unknowingly, routinely... with a functioning immune system and a little help from nature's medicines (found in foods and botanicals). Every person gets cancerous cells in their body, no exceptions. So don't be scared by talk that you've "GOT cancer. |

It is used to remedy bloating, diarrhea, edema, excessive perspiration, exhaustion, fever, indigestion, night blindness, poor appetite, side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and vomiting. Atracylodes helps regulate spleen function, thus improving the digestive system's ability to transport nutrients. It also helps strengthen the muscles of the legs. It is considered a supreme energy tonic.
A related species (Atractylodes lancea, known as black or lance-leaved atractylodes) helps dry digestive dampness.

The last time I diagnosed lung cancer in one of my patients, his oncologist recommended chemotherapy, a procedure through which the physician claimed he could bring the lung cancer into remission about 40 percent of the time. My patient was somewhat encouraged by the statistics until he asked just exactly what was meant by "remission." The oncologist answered, "If the cancer is successfully brought into remission, your life can be extended by about three months." Needless to say, this was not what my patient had hoped to hear. This is the typical, tragic story for most people with cancer. |
| We have our MRI and CT scanners, angioplasty, bypass surgery, total hip and knee replacement, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, antibiotics, advanced surgical techniques, advanced drugs, and intensive care units. Did all our medical advances increase U.S. life expectancy?
In 1990 our nation ranked eighteenth in life expectancy when compared to the same twenty-one industrialized nations forty years prior." In spite of the billions of dollars Americans spend on health care, we are now considered one of the worst industrialized nations in the world when it comes to life expectancy. |
| It has been more than three years since she finished her chemotherapy. Her hair has come back beautifully, and she is enjoying life. Her CA 125 blood counts have remained normal, and she is now having them checked only twice a year. Kymberly has had no sign of recurrence of her cancer.
Why They Work
Oncologists and radiation therapists usually discourage the use of antioxidants in patients receiving treatments for their cancer. Why? |

| Two standard medical treatments for breast cancer are chemotherapy (medicines that kill cancer cells) and hormonal therapy (medicines that stop estrogen from stimulating cancer cells to reproduce). Scientists have known that these treatments can improve the survival rates of breast cancer patients at the five- and 10-year marks, but they didn't know whether the treatments could extend the life of a breast cancer survivor by more than that. |

Last year, more than 275,000 American women were diagnosed with breast cancer. While the incidence of breast cancer has increased in the last decade, the death rate from the disease has declined. The vast majority of women who have breast cancer go on to lead full, normal lives.
Several recent studies highlight the latest breakthroughs in breast cancer treatment and prevention...
New finding: Standard treatments extend life even longer. |

The abnormal blood counts of the thirty-one patients who had cancer (including cancers of stomach, breast, lung, cervix, liver, and nasopharynx), were presumed to be a result of radiation therapy and chemotherapy The abnormal white blood cell counts in the other patients were due to other conditions, including kidney and liver diseases. Most of the patients (forty-two out of forty-five) had already tried improving their blood status with one conventional therapy or another, to no avail. |

By the mid-1990s, the word was out on the street that, to maximize one's chance of recovery from cancer, a person should be prepared to undergo not just sessions of chemotherapy or radiation but also regular sessions of bonding with other cancer patients. Here is how one patient, looking back in 1999, remembered that time:
When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, a number of well-meaning friends and family members suggested that I join a support group. |
| Siegel told of two oncologists chatting about a study they were participating in to test a combination of four chemotherapy drugs, which had the initials EPHO.
One doctor's patients were doing spectacularly well; three quarters of them were responding to the drugs. But only a quarter of the other doctor's patients were improving. Then the first doctor explained that he had simply rearranged the letters of the drugs so they spelled HOPE.
People in the audience listening to Dr. Siegel were blown away by this. Robert Buckman was one of them. |
| People whose tumors mysteriously shrink prior to chemotherapy don't credit their own efforts at, say, positive visualizations, but instead exclaim, "It must be that shiny-headed doctor."80
Others were critical for more basic reasons: at least one standard randomized trial had suggested that in fact all these efforts to cure cancer through an honest reckoning of the repressed issues in one's life made no difference. Women with breast cancer who went through Bernie Siegel's ECaP program turned out to have died at the same rate after ten years of follow-up as a group of matched controls. |

Mike:But you aren't sued if the patient dies from the chemotherapy. I don't mean to be so blunt but maybe that's what's needed.
Horner:It's so sad. Fortunately, most people who are undergoing chemotherapy or cancer treatments are trying to figure out alternatives on their own. And there are some integrative oncologists who are popping up around the country and using all of this together to get much better results than what you get with traditional treatment.
Mike: Thank goodness for people like you who bring this message to the public. |

Have you seen that mushrooms provide a protective effect for healthy cells while enhancing the toxicity of chemotherapy to cancer cells?
Kaylor: Yes, definitely, with our maitake D-fraction, we actually have a couple of clinical trials done in conjunction with chemotherapy treatment. We've found out a couple of things. One is that it decreased the negative side effects of the chemo agents by roughly 90 to 95 percent. So the decrease is in hair loss, pain, nausea, vomiting and less of a decrease of red and white blood cells. |
